What is Autism and How Does ABA Therapy Work?

In this Ability Life Solutions Video Favorite, Dr. Megan O’Bryan, Melissa Chevalier, and Dr. Michael Cameron of the Hope bridge Autism Therapy Center discuss autism and one of the most common therapeutic techniques used to improve social and learning skills in children with autism, Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA). They discuss the autism spectrum, noting that some individuals with autism experience extreme difficulties in their ability to live independently, whereas others experience very little interruption of their daily lives. Symptoms which are common to all levels of the spectrum include varying degrees of difficulty with social interaction and the presence of repetitive behaviors.

ABA was originated by famed psychologist Dr. B.F. Skinner, who found that behaviors are developed by positive reinforcement, and other behaviors that are not reinforced will become less prominent over time. This framework is applied during therapy with children with autism to reinforce positive social skills and behaviors. ABA uses a gradual process of adding and reaching new milestones to help reinforce positive behaviors which will help children develop skills which they will need to eventually live independently.
