What We Learned from this Video:

  • Basing diagnosis off of behavior is not as reliable for adults as it is for children. Adults will have learned “masking” techniques to hide their behavior and blend in with neurotypical people.
  • The first defining experience is feeling different. Being unable to relate or connect with your peers can be a sign that you are autistic.
  • The second defining experience is not being believed. Telling others something about yourself and having them not believe you is a common experience for autistic individuals. Neurotypical people have no insight into what an autistic person may want, feel or need, and therefore will think the autistic individual is exaggerating when they describe their problems.
  • The third defining experience is social confusion. Autistic people can have a tendency to overthink and overanalyze certain social aspects that come naturally to neurotypicals.
  • If you find a person who has confirmed that they are autistic and you find yourself identifying with them in many ways, it can be a strong sign that you are also on the spectrum.

Determining whether or not you have autism is a major event in your life and can be overwhelming. Make sure that you have the support you need and are taking care of yourself. Browse our Marketplace for helpful self-care products, or check out our blog post on the benefits of an adult diagnosis.
