While you may not be able to do much about an autism meltdown in full swing, there are ways to prevent a meltdown before it begins. Knowing the warning signs and having a plan to intervene early will help either stop the meltdown before it happens, or make them less intense.
Stephanie from Our LANDing Crew teaches us a few tips and tricks to help head off autism meltdowns before they begin.
What We Learned from this Video:
- The first step towards detecting a meltdown is to be on the lookout for nonverbal cues that they may be feeling distressed.
- If you see that your child is near a meltdown, redirecting them towards something that they enjoy can head off the meltdown.
- Meeting sensory needs can also help prevent a meltdown. However, if the meltdown is sensory-related, attempts to help may simply make it worse.
- Fidget toys can do both, redirecting attention or meeting sensory needs.
Preventing a meltdown can be achieved if you know the warning signs and how to redirect your child or meet their sensory needs. To learn how to handle a meltdown while it’s happening, check out this video in our Free Video Library.
