14 Feb Invisible Diversity: A Story of Undiagnosed Autism | Carrie Beckwith-Fellows | TEDxVilnius
In this talk, Carrie Beckwith-Fellows shares her personal journey towards attaining a diagnosis of autism in her mid-thirties, and discusses why it took 35 years, including the root causes of this invisible diversity.
Carrie, a freelance writer and vlogger from the UK, explores masking, stimming, sensory overload, self-harm, and other ways autistics are taught to hide their autism. She talks about the difficulty autistic girls and women experience, including how a late diagnosis might cause issues with identity, relationships and perception.
Carrie has written for online publications including The Huffington Post, Autistica, the National Eating Disorders Association USA, and her own blog, where she shares the reality of living with autism and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a complex and life-limiting illness.
