02 Nov Parenting young children with autism: Tips for a calmer child, family, and home. Successful Outings
In this video presented by Family Compass Group, Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) Billie Harber discusses strategies for parents of young children with autism to have successful outings in the community, which can often be a struggle.
Harber suggests for parents to discuss with their child what the expectations for their behavior will be before going out. Oftentimes these expectations will be related to safety; for example, parents might explain to their child before going out that they will hold their hand when they are in a parking lot. Additionally, expectations might be related to etiquette in public spaces, such as using a quiet voice in the library. It is best to express these expectations in a positive manner, rather than excluding certain behaviors (“we always walk in the library” vs. “don’t run in the library”).
