Going on Holiday with an Autistic Child | Travel Tips for Autism Families

In this video, Kevin Chapman discusses travelling several times in the past years with his son, Andy, for the first time in his young life. Kevin talks about Andy learning to enjoy the travels, and some tips he’s learned by travelling with Andy.

Kevin thinks it really helped Andy that the first place they went together and stayed in a hotel was somewhere Andy was familiar with (he had previously taken day trips to Nottingham). He suggests to parents the possibility of staying in a nearby hotel if your child is anxious about new settings.

Another tip he gives is to show your child pictures and videos of the place you are going, so they know what to expect on the holiday. A huge lesson Kevin has learned from multiple travels with Andy is to always allow extra time for travel, as there are lots of distractions and sensory inputs involved in travelling.
