As an adult getting tested for autism, there are various factors that will determine your diagnosis. Remember that criteria for a diagnosis has changed over the years, therefore you can still be diagnosed with autism as an adult if you were not as a child.
Learn from Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh as Shannon Penrod of Autism Live! interviews her on the steps to getting an adult diagnosis.
What We Learned from this Video:
- 20 years ago, diagnosis was more focused on the more severe forms of autism rather than on higher-functioning autistics.
- A psychologist or psychiatrist can help determine if a diagnosis is necessary.
- When getting a diagnosis, there are certain criteria that must be met in various areas. In terms of socialization, all three criteria must be met, but for repetitive behaviors, only one criteria must be met.
- Getting a diagnosis can get you access to applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapy, along with specialists who can help you understand the challenges you are facing.
