In this video, a list created by the University of California gives five signs of autism for parents to look out for is discussed. These are important signs for parents to be aware of when they take their child to a doctor for an autism evaluation, as they can help the doctor better understand the child’s behavior.
These signs include whether or not your child responds to their name when called, whether or not your child engages in “joint attention” (the ability to focus on both an object and the person playing with that object with them), whether or not your child imitates others, whether or not your child responds emotionally to others (for instance, a typical child will react with concern if they see another child crying), and whether or not your child engages in ‘pretend play’ (for example, pretending to be a cat or dog).
One other key point the host of the show brings up is to pay attention to any sort of skill which your child previously displayed, but then lost later on. Regression in a skill can also be an indicator of autism in young children.
